What is a canvas print?

Canvas prints are produced by printing a photograph or some other image directly onto canvas. Using some of the latest equipment in digital printing technology, the image will in most cases be printed onto cotton canvas as that produce a superior result to any other types of canvas. The canvas is then stretched over a wooden box frame, usually made up from individual stretcher bars, and fixed to the back of the frame. In many cases the supplier will make sure that your print comes with suitable canvas hangers, so that you can have the canvas print on the wall in no time at all.

Printing options

Not all canvas prints are the same, and what you get for your money may vary from one print supplier to another. Below is a list of things that you should look into before choosing a canvas printing company. Some of these options do not really affect the price while other ones do as they have an impact upon the quality of the final product:

  • What kind of canvas is used?
Canvas from 100% cotton is considered to produce the best result, and it is also what most suppliers use. There are however different types of cotton canvas, and usually the difference between them is regarding how fine, or rough, the canvas texture is.
  • Will the canvas print be re-stretchable?
Some stretcher bars incorporate a kind of tension wedges in each corner, something which not only allow the canvas to be stretched very tightly over the frame, but it also makes it possible to re-stretch the canvas. To be able to re-stretch the canvas may be of particular importance on larger canvas print sizes as they may sag slightly over time.
  • What type of stretcher bar is used?
Not only do they come in different depth, they may range from ¾" for smaller prints to 1½" or 1¾" for larger ones, they may be of very different quality as some cheaper stretcher bars may be prone to warping. Another thing which is becoming more and more important to many people is that the wood comes from sustainable certifiable sources, something which is not always the case.
  • Is a protective coating applied?
A protective coating, which usually comes in matt or gloss, gives the image additional UV protection and allows you to lightly wipe down the print without fear of damaging it.
  • How urgent is it?
Some suppliers will need just a couple of days while others may need a week or more to produce the print for you.

Order custom canvas prints online

Most suppliers of custom canvas prints will let you upload a photo or some other image to their website, after which you can select size and other features before placing the order online. A JPG image is almost universally accepted, but sometimes other formats are accepted as well. Whatever the format being used, do make sure that the image you use is of highest possible quality. A canvas print will never be any better than the image that was used. This means that it is unlikely that you can use photos taken with a mobile phone as the quality of such photos generally is well below what you get from ordinary cameras.

Choose a canvas printing company

To find companies that specialise in printing on canvas is not very hard, there are literally tons of them, but until now there hasn't been an easy way to compare them. With our list of suppliers, all carefully selected, you can focus straight away on the ones that meet your needs.

The quality

Canvas prints comes in a wide range of prices, where the more expensive ones easily can cost two or three times as much as the cheapest ones. More expensive canvas prints do however tend to be of higher quality, so choose your print supplier based on what you need. If the print is just going to hang on the wall for a couple of months, then it may not be money well spent to buy a fairly expensive print that will look great for decades to come. If you on the other hand want a canvas print that will look just as stunning in 10 years time as it does today, then you should make sure you get quality - something which may cost a bit more.
